MLB: Pittsburgh 3, San Diego 1

SAN DIEGO, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- The Pittsburgh Pirates ended a five-game skid with a 3-1 victory over the San Diego Padres Saturday night.

Kip Wells (5-6) threw 8 1/3 innings of four-hit ball.

Jason Kendall led off the game with a single, moved to second on a ground out, and with two outs scored on a Craig Wilson RBI single. Wilson then came around to score on a double to deep right field by Ty Wigginton to stake the Padres to an early 2-0 lead.

David Wells, San Diego's starting pitcher, bunted back to the pitcher and managed to reach safely to load the bases. An error by Juan Castillo allowed Long to score and kept the bases loaded.

But Kip Wells induced Mark Loretta to hit into an inning-ending double play, keeping the Pirates ahead 2-1. He allowed two walks, one run and fanned five. Jose Mesa came on to register his 31st save.

San Diego's David Wells (6-7) scattered 10 hits and allowed two runs over seven frames to lose it. He walked three and fanned five.
