BOSTON, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- Longtime NBA guard Gary Payton is now a member of the Boston Celtics.

Boston acquired Payton and forward Rick Fox Friday in a trade with the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers got guards Chucky Atkins and Marcus Banks, forward-center Chris Mihm and a future second-round draft pick.

Payton, a nine-time NBA all-star, averaged 14.2 points a game during his only season with the Lakers. He averaged just 4.2 points in the NBA championship series, which the Lakers lost to Detroit in five games.

Payton played 12 years for the Seattle SuperSonics and then went to the Milwaukee Bucks before joining the Los Angeles team.

Fox is returning to the Boston team that drafted him in 1991. He had been with the Lakers since the 1997-98 season.
