SOUTH HADLEY, Mass., July 1 (UPI) -- Amateur Brittany Lincicome made an eagle in a round of 5-under 66 Thursday that gave her the lead at the weather-plagued U.S. Women's Open.
Lincicome, 18, holed her third shot from 125 yards out at the par-5 15th and then burst into tears.
"Now, I'm going to try to win," she said. I might as well." She matched the tournament's lowest round ever shot by an amateur.
Frenchwoman Patricia Meunier-Lebouc was a shot back on a day when nearly half the field failed to complete the round due to two thunderstorm delays.
Annika Sorenstam, the pre-championship favorite, was 2-under after 15 holes when play was halted, while 14-year-old Michelle Wie shot 71.
Lincicome's eagle came when she hit a punch shot from under a tree. The ball rolled onto the green and trickled into the cup.
"After it went in I looked at my dad (her caddy) and started bawling," Lincicome said. "I could not stop."
