Jeff Gordon wins NASCAR pole

BROOKLYN, Mich., June 18 (UPI) -- Jeff Gordon the 48th NASCAR pole of his career Friday with the fastest qualifying time for Sunday's DHL 400.

Driving a Chevrolet Monte Carlo, the four-time NASCAR champion turned a lap of 190.865 miles per hour. That broke the qualifying record for the June race here and tied Bobby Labonte for the most Michigan poles among active drivers.

Gordon has two victories here but none since 2001, when he won the Kmart 400 from the pole.

Hendrick Motorsports nailed down both positions on the front row with Brian Vickers posting a lap of 190.169 mph. Teammate Jimmie Johnson qualified third at 190.164 mph.

Joining Johnson in the second row was Ryan Newman, who drove his Dodge Intrepid to a lap of 190.064 mph. Rounding out the top five qualifiers was Robby Gordon in a Chevrolet.
