"I probably got what I deserved," said Agassi, who won the open in 1999. "I was never comfortable with my shot selection, never comfortable with where I was putting the ball."

American Andy Roddick advanced with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, 7-5 win over countryman Todd Martin. Other winners included Guillermo Coria of Argentina, Carlos Moya of Spain, Tim Henman of Britain and Fernando Verdasco of Spain.

On the women's side, the defending champion and top seed, Justine Henin-Hardenne of Belgium, won her first-round match 6-4, 6-4 over French wild card Sandrine Testud.

Henin-Hardenne was playing her first match after a six-week layoff because of illness.

"It was tough at the beginning, but I came through in two sets, and that's the most important thing right now," she said.
