PITTSBURGH, May 20 (UPI) -- Daryle Ward and Jason Bay hit two homers apiece Thursday night as Pittsburgh erased an early six-run deficit to defeat San Diego, 9-7.
Pittsburgh last overcame a six-run deficit when the Pirates fought back from a seven-run margin on June 10, 2002.
Ward and Bay both went three for four with two runs scored and three RBI as Pittsburgh salvaged the finale of a three-game series.
San Diego jumped on Pirates starter Ryan Vogelsong for six runs in the first inning and added another in the second to build a 7-1 lead.
Vogelsong yielded seven runs and six hits in four-plus innings before being relieved by Brian Boehringer.
Boehringer spearheaded a huge effort from the Pirates bullpen, which allowed one hit and no walks over the final five innings.
