Moncho Lopez quits as Spain's cage coach

MADRID, May 11 (UPI) -- Coach Moncho Lopez, who guided Spain's basketball team to a berth in the 2004 Olympics, quit his post Tuesday.

In a surprise announcement, Lopez quit his post just three months before the Olympics after revealing he is set to accept a coaching offer from an ACB Liga team.

Lopez's decision was announced by the Spanish Basketball Federation on its website.

Lopez said he was quitting "because in the next few days I will reach an agreement with an ACB team and I have the firm conviction that it will be totally incompatible to do both jobs that the Spanish Federation is asking together with my new professional responsibilities."

Lopez coached Spain to a silver medal at last summer's European championships with Memphis Grizzlies star Pau Gasol leading the way as one of Europe's top players. Another key member was Utah Jazz point guard Raul Lopez, who last week decided against playing in the Olympics.
