Davydenko claims Munich championship

MUNICH, Germany, May 2 (UPI) -- Russian Nikolay Davydenko won the BMW Open in Germany Sunday with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Martin Verkerk of the Netherlands.

The title was the third of Davydenko's career. The other two came last year.

Davydenko, 22, who lives in Germany, won the match in 97 minutes, capitalizing on unforced errors by Verkerk and scoring an ace on match point.

The 25-year-old Verkerk, who was seeking his second career title, had been the highest remaining seed in the tournament at No. 4. Davydenko was unseeded.
