NBA fines Brand, suspends Williams 1 game

NEW YORK, April 7 (UPI) -- Los Angeles Clippers forward Elton Brand was fined and Memphis Grizzlies guard Jason Williams suspended for a game, both after losses to the Utah Jazz.

Brand was fined $5,000 by the NBA Tuesday for his criticism of the officiating in a 97-92 loss Sunday.

"That was definitely a badly officiated game," Brand said after the contest. "Some of the calls were terrible."

During the game, Los Angeles Coach Mike Dunleavy was ejected after picking up two technical fouls, one for protesting a foul called against Brand.

Williams, the Grizzlies' starting point guard, was suspended for one game without pay for making contact with and shouting at referee James Capers, and for failing to leave the court in a timely manner after being ejected in a 92-81 loss to Utah Monday.

Williams, who had to be restrained by teammates after he was tossed out of the game, was ineligible to play in Wednesday night's game against Cleveland.

The suspension was announced by Stu Jackson, NBA senior vice president of basketball operations.
