BUFFALO, N.Y., March 18 (UPI) -- Andre Emmett scored 20 points Thursday in helping Texas Tech hold off Charlotte, 76-73, in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
It was the first NCAA tourney victory at Texas Tech for Coach Bobby Knight, who saw his team almost blow a comfortable lead.
"I'm glad that the outcome of this game replaces the outcome of the last game I coached in Buffalo," said Knight, who lost his last game as Indiana coach here to Pepperdine, 77-57, in the first round of the 2000 tourney.
The Red Raiders will meet St. Joseph's in the second round.
Jarrius Jackson made two free throws with nine seconds left to put the Red Raiders in front by nine.
But Mitchell Baldwin converted a three-point play with three seconds remaining and, after Texas Tech committed a five-second violation, Curtis Withers made a three-point shot with a half second left.
That forced Texas Tech to make a clean play getting the ball in bounds and the Red Raiders (23-10) were able to do so.
