Snyder faces shoulder surgery, long layoff

SURPRISE, Ariz., Feb. 22 (UPI) -- Kansas City Royals right-hander Kyle Snyder will have surgery on his throwing shoulder Wednesday and will be out indefinitely, team officials said.

Snyder re-injured the shoulder during rehabilitation from a previous injury. He had arthroscopic surgery on the shoulder in September.

"It's a re-injury to the labrum," trainer Nick Swartz said. "He was in his throwing rehab," the Kansas City Star reported, and indicated that Snyder could miss several months, maybe the entire season.

General Manager Allard Baird said, "We won't know the time frame (for Snyder's return) until the doctor gets in there and gets a good look at the damage."

Dr. Craig Morgan in Wilmington, Del., is to perform the surgery, the newspaper said. Morgan has done similar operations on former Royals pitcher Paul Byrd and boston pitcher Curt Schilling, the newspaper said.

Snyder was 1-6 with a 5.17 ERA in 15 starts last season. He was placed on the disabled list in August.
