UNCASVILLE, Conn., Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Twins Bob and Mike Bryan gave the United States an insurmountable 3-0 lead against Austria Saturday in the first round of the Davis Cup.
Playing in only their second Davis Cup, the Bryans cruised to a 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Julian Knowle and Jurgen Melzer in the best-of-five tie.
The Americans are seeking their first Davis Cup victory since 1995 and have boosted their chances by finding a top-flight doubles team.
Team USA will face either Sweden or Australia in the quarterfinals. Sweden had a 2-1 lead over Australia going into Sunday's concluding singles.
The only other country to clinch a victory Saturday was Argentina, which took a 3-0 lead over Morocco.
The other first-round matchups all stood at 2-1 with Switzerland leading Romania, France leading Croatia, the Netherlands leading Canada, the Czech Republic leading Spain and Russia leading Belarus.
