COL FB: California 51, Virginia Tech 48

PHOENIX, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- Tyler Fredrickson's 35-yard field goal with no time remaining Friday night gave California a wild 51-48 victory over Virginia Tech in the Insight Bowl.

Both teams rallied from a 14-point deficit and overtime seemed likely when Virginia Tech's DeAngelo Hall returned a punt 52 yards to tie it with 3:11 to play.

The ensuing kickoff went out of bounds, however, allowing the Golden Bears to start at their own 35. Aaron Rodgers, who threw for 400 yards and two touchdowns and ran for two more scores, guided California into range for the winning kick.

Virginia Tech's Bryan Randall threw for 394 yards and four touchdowns, but the Hokies (8-5) missed three field goal tries and also had three kickoffs go out of bounds.

California (8-6) trailed late in the first half, 28-14, but then scored four unanswered touchdowns. The teams combined for 72 pass attempts without an interception.
