Stadler takes lead in SBC Championship

SAN ANTONIO, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- Craig Stadler fired a 7-under-par 64 -- the best round of the day -- to take the lead after Saturday's second round of the SBC Championship.

A winner on both the Champions Tour and PGA Tour in consecutive weeks in July, Stadler had eight birdies against just one bogey. He is at 11-under 131, two strokes better than Bob Gilder.

Stadler has won twice on the elder circuit this season. He claimed the Senior Players Championship in July and the Greater Hickory Classic three weeks ago.

Stadler turned 50 in June, becoming eligible for the Champions Tour. Six weeks later, he won the B.C. Open, a PGA Tour event played the same week as the British Open.

Gilder started the day tied for second and remained there. It is another three shots back to Tom Watson (66), Walter Hall (67) and Bruce Fleisher (70).
