Jason Schmidt pondering surgery

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- Righthander Jason Schmidt of San Francisco may have surgery to repair a partially torn tendon in his pitching arm.

Giants trainer Stan Conte says a decision will be made by this weekend.

An MRI last week confirmed the diagnosis. Schmidt also had one in early August, which disclosed the problem.

"Jason is still getting options, and we should have something by the end of the week whether we'll opt to do the surgery and who is doing it," said Conte. "We're still getting multiple opinions."

Schmidt was the Giants' ace this season and finished 17-5 with a 2.34 ERA.

"He could still throw 98 mph and harder with the tendon like that," said co-Barney Nugent, who retired at the end of the season. "I wouldn't say it was foolish of him to pitch. Brave might be the word. He showed great intestinal fortitude."

For his career, Schmidt, who also has pitched for Pittsburgh and Atlanta, is 86-67 with an ERA of 4.02.
