RALEIGH, N.C., Oct. 11 (UPI) -- Martin Brodeur stopped 30 shots and came within 7 1/2 minutes of a shutout and Sergei Brylin scored a power-play goal Saturday as New Jersey beat Carolina, 2-1.
Coming off his first Vezina Trophy as the NHL's top goaltender, Brodeur turned aside 16 shots in the opening two periods before facing 15 in the third. He lost his shutout bid on a goal by Rod Brind'Amour but helped the defending Stanley Cup champions register their first win of the season.

Jamie Langenbrunner had the other goal for the Devils.
