Australia tied with Swiss in Davis Cup

MELBOURNE, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Wimbledon champion Roger Federer recorded a victory Friday that tied Switzerland's Davis Cup semifinal against Australia at 1-1.

Scheduled to play both singles and doubles, Federer beat Mark Philippoussis, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), in a rematch of their Wimbledon final. Federer rallied from 3-5 down in the third set.

Lleyton Hewitt opened the semifinals with a 6-4, 6-4, 6-1 win over Michel Kratochvil.

Australia seeks its fourth trip to the final in the past five years.

On clay courts at Malaga, Spain took a 2-0 lead over Argentina.

Andy Roddick, trying to keep the United States in the World Group for next year, was upset by Slovakian Dominik Hrbaty, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4, on clay in Bratislava.

But Mardy Fish evened the tie at one win apiece by beating Karol Kucera in three sets.
