LOUDON, N.H., Sept. 12 (UPI) -- Ryan Newman captured his series-leading seventh pole of the season Friday for the NASCAR Winston Cup Sylvania 300.
Last year's Rookie of the Year blazed his Dodge Intrepid around the 1.058-mile oval in 28.561 seconds, averaging 133.357 miles per hour and breaking his year-old record.
Newman, who notched his maiden victory here last year, collected his 14th career pole. He is coming off his series-leading sixth win of the year last week at Richmond.
A winner of four of his last nine races, the 25-year-old Indiana native is sixth in the championship standings, 609 points behind leader Matt Kenseth.
Terry Labonte averaged 132.780 mph in his Chevrolet Monte Carlo, also surpassing Newman's year-old qualifying mark.
Jamie McMurray will line up third in his Dodge ahead of fellow Winston Cup rookie Greg Biffle in a Ford Taurus.
