Americans rally in Solheim Cup

MALMO, Sweden, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- Kelli Kuehne and Cristie Kerr led an American rally Friday that left the United States one point behind after the first day of the Solheim Cup.

The European team grabbed a three-point lead after the morning foursome matches, but Kuehne teamed with Kerr for a 2 & 1 win over Laura Davies and Catriona Matthew to start the afternoon fourball matches.

The United States won three of the four afternoon matches, leaving Europe with a 4 1/2-3 1/2 lead.

Eight more matches will be played Friday with 12 singles set for Sunday.

"We didn't get out of the blocks very fast," said U.S. captain

Patty Sheehan. "But we played catch-up pretty well in the afternoon."

Juli Inkster and Beth Daniels won their afternoon match over Annika Sorenstam and Catrin Koch, 1-up; and the Michelle Redman-Rosie Jones tandem defeated Iben Tinning and Sophie Gustafson, 1-up.
