Jets waive Jamie Martin

LANDOVER, Md., Sept. 4 (UPI) -- The New York Jets again have released a backup quarterback.

On Wednesday, they waived Jamie Martin, who was signed on Aug. 27, and brought back Marquel Blackwell, who was waived on Aug. 30 after signing as a rookie free agent on May 2.

Reports indicated that Martin, an eight-year veteran, became expendable after throwing poorly in practices in the past week.

The 5-11, 207-pounder out of the University of South Florida went 11-of-18 for 154 yards with two touchdowns in three games in the preseason.

Blackwell, an undrafted free agent, and Brooks Bollinger, a sixth-round pick out of Wisconcin in this year's draft will be the backups for 39-year-old Vinny Testaverde in Thursday night's season opener at Washington

The team has played musical chairs at the position in an effort to replace Chad Pennington, who will be out 12 weeks and possibly the season after suffering a fractured and dislocation of his left wrist in a preseason game against the New York Giants.
