Clijsters, Davenport reach semis

NEW YORK, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Kim Clijsters led a sweep of the favorites into the women's semifinals at the U.S. Open Thursday night.

Rains that have plagued the tournament since Monday finally eased so that a busy night brought the event down to the men's quarterfinals and the women's semis.

Clijsters eliminated Amelie Mauresmo, 6-1, 6-4, while the other quarterfinals saw Lindsay Davenport defeat Paola Suarez, 6-4, 6-0; Jennifer Capriati win over Francesca Schiavone, 6-1, 6-3; and Justin Henin-Hardenne cruise by Anastasia Myskina, 6-2, 6-3.

Clijsters will face Davenport in Friday night's semifinals.

The men's quarterfinals were set with those matches scheduled for Friday afternoon -- Andre Agassi vs. Guillermo Coria, Juan Carlos Ferrero vs. Lleyton Hewitt, Sjeng Schalken vs. Andy Roddick and Younes El Aynaoui vs. David Nalbandian.

Ferrero advanced Thursday by getting past Todd Martin in five sets.
