Rib cage injury sidelines Jeter

NEW YORK, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Veteran shortstop Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees is listed as day-to-day after suffering a strained lower left rib cage Sunday against Boston.

"I don't think I'm playing (Monday)," Jeter said. "Only time will tell how long it will be."

Jeter, who rarely takes himself out of a game, did just that. He suffered the injury while swinging at a pitch in the fifth, and felt noticeable pain when sliding home in the seventh.

Manager Joe Torre was not certain when Jeter would play again.

"We'll have to wait and see," Torre said. "I wish I had an answer. It's a very tough time in the season to have something like that. We have to not rush him back."

The Yankees begin a three-game series at Toronto on Monday afternoon, then host the Red Sox next weekend. Because teams can expand their rosters Monday, Jeter will not have to be placed on the disabled list.

Jeter is batting .322 this season with nine home runs and 47 RBI.
