The Steelers said on their Web site late Sunday afternoon that Porter was standing outside of the bar, the parking lot of Denver's Best Sports Bar and Grille, when a drive-by shooting occurred and was hit by a stray bullet.

Porter, 26, a Colorado State alumnus, was in the area this weekend to attend the Colorado State-Colorado college football game Saturday night at Denver's Invesco Field.

One person was killed in the shooting.

"Joey was an innocent bystander hit by a stray bullet from a drive-by shooting," said Coach Bill Cowher. ""A total of six people were injured. The bullet entered his left buttocks and is lodged in his right thigh. All the tests are being done and at this time it looks as though the bullet did not hit any vital organs."

Porter, whose playing status has not been announced, tied for the team lead with nine sacks last season, giving him 28 1/2 over the last three seasons. He was named to the Pro Bowl last season for the first time in his NFL career.
