Ferrero, Federer advance at Tennis Masters

MONTREAL, Aug. 5 (UPI) -- French Open champion Juan Carlos Ferrero and Wimbledon winner Roger Federer managed to make their hardcourt adjustments in time Tuesday.

Ferrero, the second seed from Spain, began his summer hardcourt season with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Frenchman Cyril Saulnier in the first round at the Tennis Masters Canada.

The third-ranked Federer, a native of Switzerland, rallied from a break down in the third set to beat Argentine Gaston Gaudio, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, at the $2.45 million event.

Ferrero and Federer are in a duel atop the ATP Champions Race, with the Spaniard leading by five points.

In other first-round results, ninth seed Sebastien Grosjean of France dispatched Spain's Fernando Vicente, 6-3, 6-3, and French Open finalist Martin Verkerk of the the Netherlands, seeded 15th, defeated Sargis Sargsian of Armenia, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.
