Bennett gets foot treated

CHARLOTTE, N.C., July 18 (UPI) -- Running back Michael Bennett of the Minnesota Vikings has undergone a procedure on his ailing left foot.

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported Friday that the procedure was done at a hospital in Charlotte, N.C., and was aimed at regenerating the stress fracture in the foot sufficiently enough to allow him to play this season.

Various reports have indicated Bennett, who will were a cast for the next four weeks, may not be able to play because the foot has been slow to heal.

"Our first concern is for Michael's well-being for the long term," said Coach Mike Tice. "This gives an opportunity for the rest of the backs on our team to step up and do what every player wants and that's to compete."

The paper said Dr. Robert Anderson drew bone marrow from Bennett's hip, mixed it with protein, and injected the fluid into the foot. The procedure is designed to stimulate bone growth.

Last season, Bennett rushed for 1,296 yards and five touchdowns.
