Armstrong finished 29th Thursday, 42 seconds behind Juan Antonio Flecha of Spain, who covered the 95-mile course in 3:29:33 for the first stage victory of his career.

Armstrong is 21 seconds in front of Alexandre Vinokourov of Kazakhstan.

"It's different," he said. "It's later in the race. "The classification is obviously a lot closer. Whatever happens tomorrow I think will dictate what happens in the mountains. We haven't done one this late in a while."

Armstrong, 31, who was presented the yellow jersey Thursday by actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, is bidding to become the second rider to win cycling's premier event five straight years.

The top 10 riders in the overall standings remained the same. Jan Ullrich of Germany, the 1997 winner, is sixth.
