Stewart wins first race of the year

LONG POND, Pa., June 8 (UPI) -- Tony Stewart came away from the NASCAR Pocono 500 Sunday with his first win of the season.

The defending Winston Cup champion, Stewart notched his first victory since Watkins Glen last August and triumphed at Pocono Raceway for the first time in his career.

It was the 16th win overall for Stewart and his first on an oval since the Pontiac Excitement 400 May 2002.

Mark Martin finished second in his Ford Taurus for his best result of the year and points leader Matt Kenseth - also in a Ford - was third when the race ended under caution after a wreck by Jeff Green on lap 198, two laps from the finish.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. came in fourth in a Chevrolet Monte Carlo and trails Kenseth by 176 points in the standings. Jeff Gordon, who came in 13th, is third in the standings - 233 points in back of the leader.

Pole-sitter Jimmie Johnson finished 12th.
