Henin-Hardenne wins French title

PARIS, June 7 (UPI) -- Justine Henin-Hardenne of Belgium won the women's French Open title Saturday, routing Kim Clijsters, 6-0, 6-4, in an all-Belgian final.

The match lasted just 67 minutes.

It was the first Grand Slam title for Henin-Hardenne, who knocked out world No. 1 Serena Williams of the United States in the semifinals.

By winning the tournament, Henin-Hardenne kept a promise to her late mother.

Ten years ago, she sat with her mother, Francoise, in the stands at Roland Garros watching Monica Seles beat Steffi Graf in the title. The 11-year-old girl told her mother that one day, she too, would win the French Open.

Her mother died of cancer three years later.

Henin-Hardenne, who turned 21 earlier this week, and Clijsters, who celebrates her 20th birthday Sunday, are good friends who met 10 times previously on the tennis tour. Clijsters had won seven of those matches.

Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain plays Dutchman Martin Verklerk in Sunday's men's final.
