Seattle 9; Cleveland 1

CLEVELAND, May 16 (UPI) -- Edgar Martinez belted a three-run homer before rain interrupted another quality start by Ryan Franklin Thursday night as Seattle dumped Cleveland, 9-1.

Franklin is developing into a quality arm at the back end of the Mariners' rotation. He had allowed just four earned runs in 14 1/3 innings in his previous two starts.

On Thursday night, Franklin tossed three scoreless innings, but did not get a chance at his third straight win after the game was delayed for two hours and 28 minutes by rain.

Giovanni Carrara (2-0) took over after the delay, and tossed three scoreless innings to record the victory. He allowed just three hits and two walks.

Seattle never trailed after Martinez belted his ninth homer of the season off Cleveland starter Jake Westbrook (2-3) with one in the first. Randy Winn and Jeff Cirillo had RBI singles in the third to give the Mariners a 5-0 lead before it rained.

Cleveland avoided a shutout when Omar Vizquel homered off Julio Mateo with two outs in the seventh.
