Capriati advances to quarters

INDIAN WELLS, Calif., March 8 (UPI) -- Second-seeded Jennifer Capriati routed Denisa Chladkova of the Czech Republic, 6-2, 6-2, on Saturday to reach the quarterfinals at the Pacific Lite Open.

Capriati has lost just 10 games in her opening two matches.

"I think I played pretty well," Capriati said. "I played confidently and relaxed. She's a difficult opponent to play. She's sort of got her own rhythm so you have to go along with it, sort of up and down.

"I just concentrated on my own game and played my own shots. So I think I executed everything pretty well. I had maybe one or two little lapses, just very little ones, and the rest was pretty good."

Playing at this tournament for just the third time, Capriati's previous best result here was a third-round exit in 1996. So far, she has not had problems with the dry heat or high altitude.

"I got here a few days early, so I got pretty used to everything," the 26-year-old American said. "When you're feeling good, feel like you're playing good, feel like you're in good shape, all that stuff, (the conditions) are a little bit easier to cope with."

Capriati struggled early in the season with consecutive losses at Sydney and Melbourne, where she was the two-time defending champion. She felt she had not completely recovered from recent eye surgery to remove sunspots and did not play again until mid-February at Dubai, reaching the semifinals.

No. 14 Elena Dementieva of Russia will be Capriati's fourth-round foe after a 6-3, 6-7 (1-7), 6-3 victory over Spain's Virginia Ruano Pascual.

Fourth seed and two-time champion Lindsay Davenport of the United States crushed Elena Likhovtseva, 6-3, 6-0.

After losing her serve in the first game of the match, the 26-year-old American won 12 of the next 14 games to defeat Likhovtseva for the ninth time in as many meetings.

She will take on another Russian in the fourth round after No. 13 Elena Bovina thrashed American qualifier Samantha Reeves, 6-1, 6-0.

Fifth seed Amelie Mauresmo of France got past No. 29 Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, but No. 12 Eleni Daniilidou of Greece was ousted, 6-4, 6-2, by No. 23 Meghann Shaughnessy of the United States.

Also Saturday, Vera Zvonareva held off fellow Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, and Spain's Magui Serna topped Indonesia's Angelique Widjaja, 7-5, 6-2.

Zvonareva will play Shaughnessy in the fourth round and Serna will face Mauresmo.
