Trent Green signs seven-year contract

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Feb. 27 (UPI) -- Trent Green, who last year joined Hall of Famer Len Dawson as the only Kansas City Chiefs quarterbacks to start every game for two straight seasons, signed a seven-year contract Thursday.

The Chiefs did not release financial terms, reports said the deal is worth $50 million and includes a $9.5 million signing bonus.

Kansas City also signed linebacker Mike Maslowski to a six-year contract and defensive end Gary Stills to a four-year deal. Financial terms of those contracts also were not disclosed.

Green, who was scheduled to receive an $8 million roster bonus Friday, had three years remaining on his existing contract. The Chiefs could have been forced to release Green had they not signed him by Thursday.

"As I indicated at the conclusion of the 2002 season, it was our hope that we could turn Trent's roster bonus into a signing bonus that we could then pro-rate over the length of the contract," Chiefs President Carl Peterson said.

"We have done just that in this agreement. In doing so, we have not only retained Trent's services, but we also have gained flexibility from a salary cap perspective."

Acquired from the St. Louis Rams before the 2001 season, Green has completed 583 of 993 passes for 7,473 yards with 43 touchdowns and 37 interceptions in two seasons with the Chiefs.

Last season, the nine-year veteran completed 287 of 470 passes for 3,690 yards with a career-high 26 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. He ranked fourth in the NFL with a 92.6 rating.

Maslowski started all 16 games last season for the first time in his career and set a team record with 162 tackles, breaking Gary Spani's 1979 mark of 157.

The four-year veteran has appeared in 55 games, all with the Chiefs, registering 232 tackles with four sacks, three interceptions, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

Stills has played 40 games, including one start, in four seasons with the Chiefs. Last year, he set a Kansas City record with 34 special teams tackles.

In other moves, the Chiefs extended one-year tender offers to restricted free agent Greg Wesley and linebacker Quinton Caver and cornerback Corey Harris, who were exclusive rights free agents.

Kansas City terminated the contracts of defensive end Duane Clemons and punter Dan Stryzinski.
