Rain spoils opening day of Copa Colsanitas

BOGOTA, Feb. 17 (UPI) -- American Ansley Cargill rallied for a three-set victory Monday as rain spoiled nearly half of the first-round tennis matches at the Copa Colsanitas.

Cargill overcame Ukraine's Tatiana Perebiynis, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4, to reach the second round of a main draw event for the second time this season. Last month, the 21-year-old lost to Venus Williams in the second round of the Australian Open.

Also, Russia's Olga Kalyuzhnaya dispatched Spain's Paula Garcia, 6-2, 6-2; Gisela Dulko of Argentina defeated Lourdes Dominguez-Lino of Spain, 7-5, 6-2; and Germany's Jana Kandarr got past Colombian wild card Romy Farah, 3-6, 6-1, 6-0.

Rain interrupted or postponed three matches.

Anastassia Rodionova of Russia took a 6-1 lead over eighth seed Marlene Weingartner of Germany when the showers came. The match will resume Tuesday, as will the encounters between fifth seed Flavia Pennetta of Italy and Alyona Bondarenko of Ukraine, and Spain's Anabel Medina Garrigues and Argentina's Maria Emilia Salerni.
