Texas A&M forward ruled ineligible

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Dec. 28 (UPI) -- Texas A&M junior forward Nick Anderson has been ruled academically ineligible for the rest of the season, the school announced Saturday.

Anderson averaged 4.9 points and 3.4 rebounds in nine games this season. He was Texas A&M's second-leading scorer each of the previous two years.

"We feel bad for Nick that he will not be able to play the rest of the season," Aggies Coach Melvin Watkins said. "He isn't ineligible under Texas A&M or NCAA rules, but under the Big 12 guidelines. If he played in most other conferences he would remain eligible, but that is the hand we've been dealt."

Watkins also announced that second-leading scorer Bernard King would not play Saturday against Mississippi Valley State in the consolation game of the Cable Car Classic. Watkins did not cite a reason for his decision.
