Bowling Green hires Brandon

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio, Dec. 19 (UPI) -- Bowling Green Thursday named Gregg Brandon as its new football coach.

Brandon was promoted from within, as he has spent the last two seasons as assistant head coach under Urban Meyer, who stepped down last week to fill the vacancy at Utah. Meyer posted a two-year record of 17-6 at Bowling Green.

The Falcons were the most improved team in the country in 2001, going 8-3 after winning just two games the prior season. This year, the Falcons finished 9-3, and were ranked in the top 25 for five weeks.

Brandon directed the Falcons' high-powered offense that finished third in the nation in scoring (40.8), eighth in total offense (448.9 ypg), and 15th in rushing (219.1 ypg).

Brandon, 46, joined Bowling Green after two seasons as an assistant at Colorado under Gary Barnett.

It is the first head coaching job on the college level for Brandon, who also worked as an assistant at Northwestern, Utah State, Wyoming, and Weber State.
