WASHINGTON, Nov. 7 (UPI) -- Olaf Kolzig made seven of his 32 saves in overtime before Jaromir Jagr scored a dramatic shorthanded goal with 2:04 remaining Thursday night as the Washington Capitals edged the Florida Panthers, 2-1.
Activated before the game after missing six due to a wrist injury, Kolzig had his bid for a shutout spoiled 2:47 into the third period when Kristian Huselius beat him on a breakaway.
But Kolzig was sharp the rest of the way and particularly in overtime, most of which was played in the Capitals' zone. He robbed defenseman Sandis Ozolinsh with a glove save, made a sliding pad stop on Viktor Kozlov and slid to his left to deny Huselius' attempt for the game-winner.
After Jeff Halpern won a faceoff deep in his own zone, he threaded a pass to defenseman Calle Johansson.
Johansson fed Jagr, who controlled the puck despite being checked by Valeri Bure.
With Bure hounding him, the five-time NHL scoring champion streaked through the slot and, as he reached the net, faked right before beating goaltender Jani Hurme for his eighth goal of the season.
