Boston 3, NY Rangers 2

BOSTON, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- Bryan Berard beat his former team with 39 seconds left Saturday night as the Boston Bruins erased a two-goal deficit in the third period and defeated the New York Rangers, 3-2.

A playmaking defenseman, Berard managed three goals in 82 games for the Rangers in 2001-02, but he scored his third this season, putting a wrist shot past screened goaltender Dan Blackburn from the left point.

Berard, who missed all of the 2000-01 season after nearly losing an eye, celebrated with a bloodied chin. He was hit with a high stick in the second period but did not miss a beat.

Joe Thornton and defenseman Sean Brown also scored for the Bruins, who rebounded from Thursday night's 4-1 loss to Anaheim. They have the second-best record in the Eastern Conference at 7-2-2.

Rem Murray and Mark Messier scored for the Rangers, who dropped both games on their road trip after winning two in a row at home. They have lost five of seven overall.
