New Jersey 93, Cleveland 85

ALBANY, N.Y., Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Newcomer Rodney Rogers scored 18 points and Richard Jefferson added 17 Wednesday night as the New Jersey Nets posted a 93-85 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers in the preseason opener for both teams.

Rogers made six of nine shots, including two of three from beyond the arc, in his first game since signing as a free agent. Dikembe Mutombo also made his Nets' debut and had two points and four rebounds in 23 minutes.

Kerry Kittles chipped in 13 points and Jason Kidd made four of 13 shots for 10 points for the defending Eastern Conference champions.

Darius Miles scored 19 points to lead all scorers in his first game for the Cavaliers, who acquired him from the Los Angeles Clippers in the offseason. Ricky Davis finished with 17 points and Zydrunas Ilgauskas added 15.

Cleveland rookie Dajuan Wagner, the sixth overall pick in the 2002 draft, did not make the trip due to abdominal cramps. Carlos Boozer, the Cavaliers' second-round pick, scored six points and grabbed five rebounds in 27 minutes off the bench.
