San Diego 3; Arizona 2

SAN DIEGO, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- A double by Ray Lankford off Miguel Batista and a costly error by David Dellucci led to three runs Tuesday night as the San Diego Padres posted a 3-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Mark Kotsay and Ryan Klesko singled with one out in the first off Batista, who got off to a slow start.

Lankford followed by lining a double down the right field line to score Kotsay, but Dellucci, the rightfielder, let the ball get past him for an error and Klesko and Lankford came all the way home.

Dellucci lost the ball in the bullpen down the line and had trouble retrieving it. Lankford had no idea what was going on as he was waved home by third base coach Tim Flannery.

Batista (7-9) settled down and yielded just one hit over his final six innings. The righthander, who struck out three, fell to 0-2 against the Padres this season.

Adam Eaton (1-1) was the story for San Diego. He allowed one run and a pair of hits while striking out six in seven innings. Eaton notched his first career victory against the Diamondbacks, who have a magic number of five for clinching a playoff spot.

Closer Trevor Hoffman retired the side in order in the ninth for his 39th save. He survived a scare when Erubiel Durazo flied out to the warning track in center with one out.

Eaton had struggled in his first three starts of the season following right elbow surgery, failing to last more than five innings.
