New England 2, Dallas 1

DALLAS, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- Another multi-goal game by MLS Player of the Week Taylor Twellman lifted the New England Revolution to a critical 2-1 triumph Saturday night over the Dallas Burn.

The win moved New England into the final playoff spot with one game to play. The Revolution can clinch a postseason berth with a victory over the depleted MetroStars on Sep. 21. Seemingly out of the race a few weeks ago, they can secure the second seed with a win and a loss by Columbus.

The turning point of this game came in the 35th minute. A close-range shot by Brian Kamler was stopped by Burn goalkeeper Matt Jordan and the ball fell to Wolde Harris, whose shot was blocked by Ryan Suarez. But the All-Star defender was judged to have used his arms and was sent off.

Twellman converted the penalty kick for his 21st goal of the season.

The first half was played at a measured pace in 91-degree heat at the Cotton Bowl.

After Adin Brown stopped shots by Bobby Rhine and Joselito Vaca early in the second half, Twellman doubled the lead in the 64th minute.

Twellman started the play by feeding Steve Ralston on the right side of the box. Ralston crossed the ball near the edge of the box. Goalkeeper Matt Jordan got a hand on Twellman's diving header but could not stop it from crossing the goal line.

Twellman tied Carlos Ruiz of the Los Angeles Galaxy for the league lead with his 22nd goal and moved past him to the top of the scoring chart with 49 points.

Dallas ended the match with only nine men after defender Paul Broome was sent off for his second bookable offence after fouling Daniel Hernandez.
