Woods wins while not at his best

GRAND BLANC, Mich., Aug. 11 (UPI) -- Tiger Woods, playing at far less than his best, took advantage of Esteban Toledo's problems over the final nine holes Sunday and won for the 33rd time on the PGA Tour --- a four-shot victory at the Buick Open.

Woods had only a one-shot lead going to the 13th tee, but picked up four shots over the next three holes and built a lead plenty big enough to survive a double bogey at the par-3 17th.

He shot a 2-under 70 Sunday over the Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club course for a four-day total of 17-under 271.

Toledo, who began the day one shot behind Woods, suffered four bogeys on the back nine and eventually fell back into a tie for second place at 275 with Mark O'Meara, Brian Gay and Fred Funk. A bogey on the final hole cost Toledo $139,000.

Paul Azinger was among those tied for sixth at 276 while defending PGA champion David Toms was in the group at 277.

Woods and the rest of the world's best players now head for Minnesota, where the PGA Championship will be begin next Thursday. Woods will be trying for his third major title of the year and ninth of his career.

To win, however, he will likely have to turn in a better effort than he did during this weekend. After breaking open the tournament with a 9-under 63 Friday, Woods played the final two rounds in 3-under 141.

"I wasn't exactly hitting it well the last two days," he said. "But I was putting well and I made a lot of key putts.

"I have three days to get ready. I know what I'm doing wrong. It is just a matter of not doing it. It's in there. I just need to get it out."

Woods made the turn Sunday with a two-shot lead over Toledo, who promptly reduced it to one with a birdie at the 10th. But Woods almost made an ace at the par-3 11th and his tap-in birdie boosted the advantage back to two.

At the short, par-4 12th, Woods had a four-foot putt for birdie, but lipped it out. And when Toledo made his three-foot birdie effort, he was again within a shot of the world's No. 1 player.

Things turned at the par-5 13th, however, even though Woods drove poorly into the right rough near a tree and Toledo put his tee shot in the middle of the fairway. Woods managed to hit his second shot just short of the green, but Toledo pulled his second well left and his third shot ran all the way across the putting surface and into a pond.

Woods eventually made a birdie and Toledo a bogey to leave the margin at three shots and it grew to five when Toledo bogeyed the next two holes.
