Philadelphia 5, San Diego 4 (16 innings)

SAN DIEGO, Aug. 7 (UPI) -- While one Bobby Jones baffled the Philadelphia Phillies Tuesday, the other was solved immediately.

Placido Polanco singled home Marlon Anderson with two out in the top of the 16th inning, lifting the Phillies to a 5-4 marathon victory over the San Diego Padres.

After Bobby M. Jones tossed three scoreless innings of relief, San Diego manager Bruce Bochy called upon his ninth pitcher of the game in Bobby J. Jones (7-6), who was hammered for seven runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings by Cincinnati on Sunday.

The Phillies wasted little time against the veteran righthander as Anderson opened the frame with an infield single and advanced to second on second baseman Julius Matos' throwing error.

After a botched sacrifice attempt by pitcher Rheal Cormier and a groundout by Doug Glanville that moved Anderson to third, Polanco slapped an 0-1 offering into center field, giving Philadelphia the lead.

Cormier (5-5) pitched three scoreless innings for the win, yielding a hit and two walks while striking out three.

Pat Burrell erased a two-run deficit in the sixth with a two-run homer, his 27th of the season, and Philadelphia moved ahead in the 11th on Tomas Perez's solo shot. But closer Jose Mesa blew his eighth save of the season in the bottom of the frame, yielding an RBI single to Matos.

Padres starter Oliver Perez pitched seven strong innings, allowing three runs and four hits while striking out seven and walking two. He left the game with a slightly sprained left shoulder suffered when sliding head-first into first base trying to beat out a grounder for his third hit of the contest.
