Da Matta wins fourth straight CART race

TORONTO, July 7 (UPI) -- Brazilian Cristiano da Matta led wire-to-wire Sunday to win the Molson Indy Toronto and tie the record of Alex Zanardi and Al Unser Jr. with a fourth consecutive victory in the CART series.

Zanardi, who waved the starting and checkered flag in the race, set his mark in 1998. Unser did it in 1990.

Da Matta became the first start-to-finish winner in CART since Dario Franchitti in 1999. He was never threatened over the 112-lap race, which featured a series of incidents in the late stages. Da Matta has won seven of the last 10 races on the circuit.

Kenny Brack of Sweden finished 4.398 seconds behind in second place. Da Matta's Newman/Haas teammate and countryman Christian Fittipaldi was third, followed by Shinji Nakano of Japan for his best career result in CART. Nakano bettered last week's fifth-place result in Chicago, which was his best to date.

Scot Dixon of New Zealand was fifth for his top finish of the year.
