LPGA Championship plagued by rain

WILMINGTON, Del., June 6 (UPI) -- Karrie Webb, a two-time Player of the Year who is winless in six starts this year, was 5-under-par through 15 holes Thursday and owned the lead when the first round of the LPGA Championship was suspended because of thunderstorms.

Webb appears to be out of her slump in the first of three LPGA majors scheduled over the next three months.

"I hope so," Webb said when asked if she felt her game was finally coming together. "It's still early in the tournament. But I felt good on the course today. I hit some good shots and I made some putts out there, which is really good to see early in the week."

Annika Sorenstam won the Nabisco Championship in March and is trying to become the first woman in 16 years to win the first two legs of the Grand Slam. She was 3-under after 10 holes, but started missing greens on her back nine and stumbled to a 1-under 70.

The first round was suspended with 72 players still on the course. First-round play will resume at 7:30 a.m. EDT Friday.
