Pittsburgh 3, Los Angeles 2

PITTSBURGH, April 25 (UPI) -- Josh Fogg had a career-high seven strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings and Brian Giles drove in a pair of runs Thursday as the Pittsburgh Pirates avoided a sweep with a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Fogg (3-0) gave up one run and seven hits and manager Lloyd McClendon used five pitchers to hold the lead before Mike Williams gave up one hit in a scoreless ninth inning for his major league-leading ninth save in as many opportunities.

Acquired in December along with Kip Wells and Sean Lowe from the Chicago White Sox for Todd Ritchie, Fogg threw 57 of 87 pitches for strikes.

The righthander allowed at least one baserunner in each inning but walked only one and escaped possible trouble in the fourth inning when he struck out Adrian Beltre and Mark Grudzielanek following a one-out double by Brian Jordan.

Hideo Nomo (2-3) allowed three runs -- one earned -- and three hits in six innings as the Dodgers lost for just the second time in eight games.
