NEW YORK, March 16 (UPI) -- Bob Watson, making his first ruling as baseball's dean of discipline a substantial one, suspended or fined seven members of the San Diego Padres and Anaheim Angels for their roles in a brawl on March 9, 2002.
Receiving suspensions -- that take effect at the start of the regular season -- were San Diego starter Bobby Jones (seven games), San Diego outfielder Ryan Klesko (five games), Anaheim third baseman Troy Glaus (two games) and Anaheim first baseman Scott Spiezio (six games).
Jones, Klesko and Spiezio will have their suspensions begin on Opening Day while Glaus is slated to begin serving his suspension on Monday, April 8.
Anaheim starter Aaron Sele, Anaheim outfielder Ron Gant and San Diego first baseman Phil Nevin were fined undisclosed amounts for their roles in the altercation.
Watson took over for Frank Robinson as major league baseball's vice president for on-field operations earlier this year. Robinson left to manage the league-run Montreal Expos.
