Georgia 88, Kentucky 84

LEXINGTON, Ky., Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Jarvis Hayes, a transfer from Western Carolina, poured in a career-high 30 points Wednesday night as the Georgia Bulldogs stunned No. 9 Kentucky, 88-84.

Georgia (13-2, 2-0 SEC East) snapped a 16-game overall losing streak to the Wildcats and improved to 3-50 all-time at Rupp Arena.

Kentucky (9-4, 0-2) opened a 79-75 lead on a pair of free throws by Tayshaun Prince with 5 1/2 minutes left. The Bulldogs scored five quick points, including a jumper by Hayes, for an 80-79 edge with 4:28 to go.

Hayes struck again with 64 seconds remaining with a jumper that gave Georgia the lead for good at 84-82. The Wildcats turned to Cliff Hawkins, who took nearly all the shots down the stretch as he did in an overtime loss to Duke on Dec. 18.

Hawkins missed a short jumper and Keith Bogans was blocked on a follow shot. Hawkins scooped up the loose ball and was blocked in the lane before the Bulldogs came up with the loose ball. Rashad Wright made one of two free throws for an 85-82 advantage with 33 seconds left.

On the Wildcats' next possession, Hawkins went for the tie but his three-pointer was long. Wright again made one of two from the line with 20 seconds left for an 86-82 advantage.

Georgia's Ezra Williams made six three-pointers for 20 points as the Bulldogs made 10 of 23 from long range.
