New Jersey 5, Phoenix 2

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., Nov. 1 (UPI) -- Patrick Elias continued to torch opponents at home with two goals and rookie Andreas Solomonsson scored his first career goal Thursday night to help the New Jersey Devils extend their winning streak to six games with a 5-2 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes.

New Jersey's "A Line" of Elias, Jason Arnott and Petr Sykora amassed 21 points through the first five games of their winning streak. Arnott and Sykora were held scoreless for the second straight game Thursday night, but no one has shut down Elias at home.

He opened the scoring 11:01 into the game and added a power-play goal in the second period, giving him six goals and seven assists in five games at Continental Airlines Arena.

New Jersey dominated the first period. After Elias netted his first goal, Salomonsson scored on the power play less than four minutes later, snapping Phoenix's streak of 23 consecutive killed penalties.

Sergei Nemchinov tallied his first goal of the season just 16 seconds later for a 3-0 lead. Following Elias' second goal, Randy McKay scored with 6:18 left in the second period for an insurmountable 5-0 cushion.

Martin Brodeur stopped 22 shots and was dominant until allowing a power-play goal by Michael Handzus 17:43 into the second period. He let another one by Ossi Vaananen slip by midway through the third but still managed his sixth straight victory.

Brodeur is 9-4-0 lifetime against Phoenix, which had a two-game winning streak snapped and lost its fifth straight visit to New Jersey.

Robert Esche turned away 27 shots for the Coyotes. He has given up five goals in each of his last two starts here.
