UNITED NATIONS, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- A solar lighting project in India is a model for the way governments can address climate change, the U.N. environment agency said ahead of a Mexico summit.
The U.N. Environment Program highlighted an Indian solar facility as the inaugural project in its "30 ways in 30 days" initiative meant as a run up to a climate conference in Cancun.
The international community starts a meeting for the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change at the end of November in Cancun, Mexico.
World leaders are calling for a balanced set of decisions to find a common environmental agreement at the climate summit.
Global climate negotiations remain deadlocked after the Copenhagen climate summit last year ended without a binding climate protection agreement.
The Indian project uses funds from the United Nations, Royal Dutch Shell and two Indian banks to advance the use of solar lights.
More than 60 percent of the population in India has no access to reliable electricity and UNEP said the solar light project was a model for the international community.
"More could be done if governments, corporations and communities scaled up this (type of) work," the agency said.
