Britain expecting solar energy boom

LONDON, March 31 (UPI) -- A carbon-free energy future is expected to create a boon for the solar energy sector in the European markets, solar advocates said in London.

The Pew Environment Group found in March that China set some of the strongest targets for renewable energy as it surpasses the United States as the country emitting the most amounts of harmful greenhouse gases.

Britain ranked third in the report with $11.2 billion in investments for green energy with its European partners boasting similar plans.

Meanwhile, a feed-in tariff, by which homeowners are paid three times the retail price for electricity fed back into the grid from solar users, goes into effect Thursday in Britain.

Edwin Koot, the chief executive of solar news portal Solar Plaza, said the decision could be a watershed moment for the region in terms of clean energy.

"We've seen market boost and successful kick-starting in other countries like Italy, Belgium and Germany," he said. "Within three years the (United Kingdom) could be one of the major solar energy markets in Europe."

More than 150 delegates from the solar energy sector are expected at a June 22 London summit.
