Enbridge proposes shale gas pipeline

CALGARY, Alberta, March 23 (UPI) -- Canadian pipeline giant Enbridge said it was eyeing the possible route for a pipeline to move natural gas liquid from Marcellus shale to the Chicago market.

Calgary's Enbridge announced plans to build the natural gas liquids pipeline to transit gas from the Marcellus gas play in the Appalachian basin to its Aux Sable plant near Chicago.

Stephen Letwin, executive vice president for gas transportation at Enbridge, said the proposed pipeline would provide a long-term solution for the development of the Marcellus gas play.

"The Chicago area has substantial markets to accommodate the large volumes of NGLs that are expected to be associated with future Marcellus production," he said.

The U.S. Department of Energy estimated in 2009 that the Marcellus shale region held as much as 262 trillion cubic feet of recoverable natural gas.

Enbridge said it would build, develop, own and operate the planned pipeline. An open season to gauge market interest in the project is slated for the second quarter of 2010.
